Our client was attending an entertainment event in downtown Los Angeles located in an old historic building. She was at a doorway and there was a single step. She tripped and fell on this step fracturing her right hip. She ultimately needed a total hip replacement.
This case was handled expertly by our attorney's. After investigating the location, we hired a Building Safety Expert for his opinion of the case. He determined that the step was a building code violation.
The defense countered that since the building was a historic structure, the the building code did not apply.
After we researched the building permits and plans showed that the step was NOT a part of the original historic structure. So, the step at issue was in fact built in violation of the building code.
The defense settled the case for $240,000.
